Located in the southwest corner of China, long known as a frontier area, Yunnan Province is a mysterious and beautiful land, rich in natural resources. The topography of the land is complex, ranging from numerous mountain ranges & river systems descending from Tibet in the northwest to arid plains and dense jungles. The majority of this land is folded into range after range of mist-shrouded mountains, hence the meaning of "Yunnan" -- "South of the Clouds." The climate ranges from the frigid and alpine areas of the northwest to the tropical rain forests in the south. Kunming the capital, called the Spring City, possesses a moderate California-like climate. Yunnan is home to 36 million people and the largest number of unreached peoples in China. The beautiful kalaidescope of ethnic minorities provides for a rich and varied cultural setting. Rich in thousands of species of trees, plants & flowers and incredible mineral wealth, Yunnan remains one of the least developed and poverty-stricken areas of China. Travel into major tourist areas is relatively easy, but beyond that becomes more arduous as the numerous mountains impede progress.
