In the past, when evangelists went to share the gospel with two Hani sub-groups, the people were receptive and the harvest was great. The Hani people are ready for the gospel, they simply lack access. The majority of Hani groups are untouched with the good news.
In the 1940s two of the smaller groups, the Kadue (Kado) and the Biyue (Biyo) centered in the Mojiang region were the recipients of intense evangelistic work by missionaries. Reports of over 40,000 Hani (Biyue & Kaduo) were reported with

the starting of dozens of churches. After missionaries were forced out by the Communists, the Biyue & Kaduo believers were persecuted and their churches shut down. Over the decades many of these believers have passed away. One Biyue young woman recently commented that her grandparents were Christian (the 1940s generation), but her father "fell away" during the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s and many in that generation are not Christians. This young woman's generation (3rd generation) stands at a crossroads of whether to turn back to the gospel or not. Estimates are that there are currently 8,000 - 9,000 Christians and one church among these twosub-groups. |

We have no reports of any Christians, churches, evangelists, Scripture portions, radio broadcasts or Jesus Film among any other Hani groups including the majority group with the official title of Hani. The Aini, who are called Akha in Thailand and Myanmar (Burma) have a few believers and there are Bible portions which are out of print. The fact is that the majority of the Hani groups cannot hear the gospel in their heart language even if they travel on foot for a week. It's just not available. Generally, the farther one travels from Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, the more rugged the terrain and the more unreached are the Hani. Outside of the Mojiang region, the Hani are untouched with the gospel. If we are not careful, we can "write off" the Hani as "reached" if we count the Biyue and Kadue believers and fail to see that there are 18+ other groups that have no believers. As a result, the Hani remain one of the most unreached people groups in China. The vast majority have not even heard that there is a person named Jesus or a Most High God. If you backpack through Hani regions for a week, you can go without seeing one Christian or church. You will find people who heard of Coca-cola, but never of Jesus Christ!
