Which Hani Group???
The Hani are a cluster of 20+ distantly related tribal people groups that speak over 10 different languages & dialects.  Unfortunately, in the 1950s, the central government lumped them all into one category and called them Hani despite the unique and beautiful diversity of each group.  It's hard to speak of them as one group when they call themselves by over 44 different names.  How easy it is for the gospel to touch one group and miss all the others if we are not observant.  God desires each of those groups to stand before His throne in worship!

Despised & Rejected!
The Hani are one of the oldest group in Yunnan Province.  However, over the last 2500 years, continual migrations of newer & stronger people groups have steadily driven them from the fertile lands and pushed them higher up the less fertile mountainsides.  There they developed the art of terracing the mountainsides to farm.  Despite this, they remain the poorest people group in China.  When communist officials first encountered one Hani village in the 1950s, eight villagers

had no clothes to wear.  The entire possessions of an ordinary family consisted of only small iron pot and an earthenware bowl.  Their plight today has not improved much in the mountains.  And living in the rugged semi-tropical mountains, the Hani are essentially cut-off from most interaction with non-Hani peoples.

Their Daily Lifestyle
As farmers in the rural mountainsides, most Hani are illiterate and poorly educated.  Most can speak their local dialect, and those that have been to school or live near larger towns can speak the trade language -- Mandarin.  The Hani are a wonderfully hospitable people who welcome strangers into their homes and serve them the best they can offer.  Spread out in small villages carved in the rugged terrain, the Hani can be heard singing the songs that describe their rich 2500 year history.  Dancing and singing are important parts of their daily lives and yearly festivals.

Their Dress
The Hani are varied in their dress according to their particular tribal group.  Generally they wear dark blue and black fabrics, often accented with silver decorations.  As you look at their wonderful diversity in the pictures on this site remember that God wants them all to stand before the throne in worship. "Behold, a great multitude, which no one could count, from every nation and all tribes and peoples and tongues, standing before the throne and before the the Lamb." Rev. 7:9
