1999 Ecuador Annual Homeschool Fieldtrip
Monday through Friday, August 23-27, the homeschool children enjoyed an exciting field trip to the northern province of Esmeraldas. Those who participated were: The Bruce Parsons family, Bruce, Carol, Douglas, William, Richard and Joanna; The Johnny Maust Family, Johnny, Donna, John Mark, Andrew and Hannah; The Garry Wester family, Garry, Sharlotte and Daniel; and Eric Jordan of the Scott Jordan family.
We set off in a canoe to visit several islands and areas of interest such as the National Mangrove Reserve, Pelican Island and La Tola - an archeological site of the ancient Tola culture dating back to 400 years BC. Here they have uncovered many artifacts, including clay, ceramic and gold pieces. We visited the fishing port of San Lorenzo and swam in a beautiful bay area with a waterfall and also on the northernmost beaches of Ecuador. One of the mangrove sites visited boasts the tallest mangroves in the world, the Great Red Mangroves with aerial roots reaching up to 80 feet.
