The Singing Men of North Central Texas performing in the Roman Theater in Mérdia
More than twenty-three local Spanish entities, including mayors, the president of Extremadura, and even archbishops, provided The Singing Men of Texas, directed by Don Blackley, their finest performance halls (including a Roman theater built in 25 B.C. and the largest cathedral in Spain). Local banks printed full-color posters, programs, and distributed thousands of tickets across the region. The Texans included the President of Texas Baptists Dr. Russell Dilday, two mayors --Wilson Griffin from Corsicana and Dr. Bill Thornton from San Antonio-- and Army General Thomas Stone representing Texas Governor George W. Bush. They were officially received by eight mayors. Mayor Saponi even paid over $1,400 to lodge Baptists in his city! Eleven concerts were performed before large, enthusiastic audiences and on television. Fifteen adults made professions of faith in Jesus Christ (several have been baptized since). There were 1,021 families filled out response cards requesting tapes, to be delivered by the local Baptist churches and missionaries in seven cities. We thank God for the Singing Men!
