Family News
The most exciting news from our family is that both Faith and Joshua asked Jesus into their hearts this year. Faith in November 1998 and Joshua in March 1999. There is no greater joy than seeing your own children come to faith in Jesus!
A major change for us is fast approaching as in August this year Hope will be starting at Louisiana College in Pineville, LA. She will be greatly missed in Cáceres where she is such a valuable part of our lives and ministry.
Grace has completed her third year at the conservatory, majoring in flute, and has also played basketball this year. Faith has finished her first year of trombone. Although the instrument is almost as big as Faith, she's making good progress. Faith's ballet class performs in the Gran Teatro this summer. Joshua played handball and has become enamored with the game of chess. Justo, his chess teacher, encouraged him to play in an exhibition in the city plaza. Through all their classes the children have made many new friends in our community.

The Year at a Glance
After Mission Meeting 1998, our family headed for Interlaken, where we enjoyed great preaching and fellowship amid the astounding beauty of the Swiss Alps. We are grateful to the regional office for their MK Euroventure scholarships for Hope and Grace. In August, it was a joy to welcome to Spain our children's new teacher, journeyman Sarah Malpass. We thank the Lord so much for sending her, not only to teach, but also to bless our children with her cheerful attitude and Christian example. She's doing an outstanding job and is a great witness in our community. It was our privilege to have Sarah's parents and brother visit Cáceres. Sarah's brother has accepted a journeyman position in Argentina, starting this summer.
Our home Bible study has continued to grow with a weekly attendance of up to15 or 20 young adults. We have had great discussions about the Christian life and have explained how to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. In October, a Spanish lawyer, Rafa, accepted the Lord in our home. In the Spring, an American exchange student, Ashley, also received Christ and we began to disciple her.

Twenty-One Baptized
Easter 1999 felt more like the Day of Pentecost, when eleven men submitted themselves for believers' baptism. Over the years of ministry in the local prison, this was our first opportunity authorized by the warden to hold a baptismal service inside the prison walls. For the occasion it took a team effort to construct a portable baptistry out of 12-year-old wood from our first missionary crates. David, Joy, Joshua, and Antonio (a released inmate) cut and assembled the frame, then Sarah and the girls painted the baptistry white. Others from our home group also lent a hand. The Lord provided a brilliant, hot day for the outdoor service in the prison courtyard. Many inmates and guards listened intently to David's evangelistic message and call. There was a joyful spirit of dedication and commitment. Most had never witnessed a baptism by immersion before. Many of the guards remarked what a wonderful service it was. Since the baptism these men have each received a Bible and have faithfully attended weekly services. Another baptismal service is scheduled for Sunday, June 20. We have several new believers who have asked to be baptized. It is exciting to see what the Lord is doing in their lives! Pray for those who are released or transferred to other prisons, that the Lord would use their Christian testimony as a powerful witness across Spain and North Africa.

Singing Men Tour
Another inspiring event has been the tour of the Singing Men of Texas, who performed eleven concerts in eight auditoriums and three cathedrals throughout Extremadura and Andalucía April 20-28, 1999. Baptists were officially received by eight mayors, and financially sponsored by over twenty-four Spanish organizations in Cáceres, Coria, Badajoz, Mérida, Montánchez, Trujillo, Sevilla, Cádiz, El Puerto de Santa María and Córdoba. For example, two banks and two city halls printed thousands of full_color posters, programs, tickets and even the response cards. City, county and regional governments provided their finest theaters free of charge. One highlight was the invitation to perform in the prestigious Roman Theater in Mérida (built in 25 B.C.). Baptists sang triumphantly just yards from the Roman Coliseum where Christians had been humiliated and martyred for their faith two thousand years before.
International forums on the theme of the family were also held with simultaneous translation in the city halls of Cáceres, Cádiz and Sevilla, led by Pastor Antonio Gomez and former missionary Mike Gonzales. Local Baptist pastors were invited by Spanish mayors and city leaders to join the friendly dialog. Relevant issues were discussed, including how churches can help to meet the needs of modern families.
At the concerts, many people were amazed how friendly the Texans were. Unlike in secular performances, the singers left the stage and mingled with the audience. They introduced themselves and shared their personal testimonies with thousands of people from every level of society--mayors, councilmen, businessmen, teachers, shopkeepers, students and even prison inmates.
We praise God for the estimated 7,500 to10,000 who attended the performances. Four television networks--with a possible viewing audience of seven million-- broadcast three concerts and the Family Forum in Cádiz. During the tour, at least twelve people accepted the Lord. Approximately one thousand families filled out response cards to request a Christian tape. Our team -including the Rogers, the Barnets, and local pastors- are personally delivering these tapes to Spaniards. The blessings continue as we are making many new friends who share in their own words how God has touched their lives as a direct result of the choir tour. Spaniards tell us how they were inspired by the sense of peace and joy that radiated through the music. When Joy visited Alfia, a Russian lady from a Muslim background in the Tartar Republic, whom she had met at one of the concerts in Cáceres, the Lord opened the door for her to share how to accept Christ. What a delight to hear Alfia pray to invite Jesus into her life! Only the Lord knows the far_reaching effects of all that He is doing.
We thank God and applaud the hard work of Don Blackley, Bruce Berry, The Singing Men of North Central Texas, Barry and Linda Barnet, Joel Matheny, Sarah Malpass, Mike and Christie Creswell, Grace Robinette, Julio Chafer, Antonio Gómez, Fernando Méndez, Xoan Castro, our children, our mission cluster, the UEBE and countless worldwide prayer warriors who helped to take the good news of Jesus Christ to city halls, theaters and homes across southwest Spain.

Stateside Assignment (furlough)
During a short and busy furlough this summer, we plan to visit Joy's parents in England and David's mother in Texas. Continue to pray with us for Joy's mother, Lyn Edwards, who is receiving treatment for lymphoma. After visiting many churches and friends in England, Texas, and Arkansas, settling Hope into Louisiana College and participating in a furlough conference in Atlanta, we will return to Cáceres at the beginning of October, in time for the children to re_start classes with Sarah.
